A true son of the Enlightenment and a keen student of polite manners, Handel learned to express hirnself in the French language. Sornetirnes he even corresponded with Gerrnan friends in French. lt is not surprising that he should have essayed cornposition in the french rnanner and to French words, but only that he did so on one isolated occasion c. 1708 while in Italy. The songs here published are presurned to have been written either for a patron or for a girl friend. In any case insofar as Handel is concerned they are unique, ernphasising once rnore- but frorn a different angle-his cosrnopolitanism.
