My arrangement is based on a piano score published in 1907 and is faithful both to the key of the original and to the harmony and stylistic patterns that make the piece so distinctive and fun.
Each player in the quartet (it works with a large ensemble too) has the tune and some enjoyable countermelodies. The soundclip takes the tempo just a little slower than customary, to suit the slow "attack" of the strings and the chance to build a lush vibrato. Some pizzicato and changes of texture add real variety.
For quartets with limited experience, you can take this arrangement slowly - there is plenty of interest for everyone and the music doesn’t stagnate. More experienced quartets can "up the pace" and the music has constant countermelodies coming in to delight any audience.
The overall standard is intermediate, and there are a couple of "ossia" bars that might prove easier.
The music comprises the opening Theme (which you can hear on the soundclip on the SMP website) and the Trio. Although the original music is not marked with a "DC", a repeat would make for an even more substantial concert item.
