From the Carnegie Hall to the Barbican Centre: as a pipa soloist, Yang Jing has toured all major concert halls. 'A Traveller's Chant' affords Yang Jing-the composer to take center stage alongside the renowned virtuoso. These works for diverse chamber music groups demonstrate Yang Jing's status as the foremost ambassador of a modern Asian music tradition. From rigid, strict formal structures Yang Jing's compositions create sound-worlds of mysterious beauty, lavish color, and harmonic depth. Composer Yang Jing made a name for herself by touring across the globe as a pipa and guzheng virtuoso. She is considered the foremost ambassador of modern Asian music: she teaches, directs music ensembles, and runs festivals. Her passion for ancient music traditions and her impressive experience across all styles and genres, brought into dialogue by her unquenchable thirst for new ventures, have created a unique, distinct idiom in which Asian and Western music merge into one. The fresh, dynamic way of combining her own instruments with Western instruments is a particular trademark of her works. She composes for European and Asian ensembles, especially for formations of mixed instruments. She has founded several ensembles and performed with renowned musicians such as the jazz percussionist Max Roach and the drummer Pierre Favre. Yang Jing has been living and working in Switzerland since 2003.
