Also known as “Poor WayfaringStranger” and “I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger”, this song probably originatedin the early 19th century. Ithas been recorded numerous times, but most significantly appears in the 2019film “1917” where a soldier sings this plaintive melody to his fellowcomrades just before going into battle. This arrangement is divided into twosections. Section one is a very hauntingscenario, very plain with insistent harmonic devices. The second section is amore elaborate version with more harmonic movement and tempo extensions tocreate more drama. It ends asplaintively as it begins.
