The combination of 3/4 meter and seven bar phrases maintains hints of the 4/4 Sacred Harp tune from which it derives. The accompaniment is meant to suggest the hammer dulcimers that the composer fell in love with while attending fiddlers conventions in the mountains of Virginia many years ago.
