This arrangement of the Freddie Hubbard jazz standard is inspired by the big band arrangement by Mike Tomaro for the Airmen of Note, and when you hear the full demo, you’ll notice right away that the tall voicings come right out of the contemporary big band sphere. A funky 12/8 groove persists throughout the head sections, although the solo section has looser funky section and also swings for a bit, with great backgrounds coming in and out for texture changes. A brief shout leads into a huge return to the melody, and a surprising “high-information” reharmonization section adds a particularly “Marshian” flair. The hip, modal harmony and the wild arranging techniques make this one a classic for vocal jazz groups and a great one for your advanced vocal jazz ensemble.
