The German cellist Georg Goltermann (1824-2898) wrote virtuoso cello music for his own performances, and he continued to write music for developing cellists after he left the concert stage. The Fourth and Fifth Concertos are prime examples. Goltermann wrote his Second Concerto while he was still perforing. It is therefore a more technically advanced piece tha his student concertos that followed it. Indeed, the Second Concerto was clearly designed to dazzle audiences. Goltermann's concertos form an essential part in developing the cellists DNA needed to play the great cello repertoire of Schumann, Dvorak, Lalo, Saint-Saens and Tchailovsky definitively.
