For Piano. Composed by Bela Bartok. Edited by Laszlo Somfai. Piano Solo, Piano & Keyboard, Repertoire, Solos. Three Hungarian Folk Tunes. Softcover Book. 11 pages. G. Henle #HN1407. Published by G. Henle (HU.HN1407).12.2 x 9.3 inches.
Among the many works that Bartok created between 1914-1918 on Hungarian and Romanian folk tunes, these three piano pieces play a special role. Originally sketched for the collection of 15 Hungarian peasant songs (Urtext edition HN 1404), the designs then remained unprocessed for twenty years. Only in 1941, when Boosey & Hawkes asked the composer, who had meanwhile emigrated to America, to contribute to a jubilee album for the great pianist Ignaz Paderewski, Bartok returned to these long-recorded piano pieces on the folk music of his homeland and revised them carefully. The first edition, published in 1942, does not print the folk music as an exception; but they are of course reproduced in this Urtext edition, which is based on the Bartok Complete Edition.
