Published by Drake Mabry Productions (S0.692703).The Viola Concerto, is concerned with the illusion of a 3-dimensional space with its elements and form delineated by different types of silence, and the projection of that illusional space in hypothetical 2- dimensions. It is subtitled “Coaxing the Shadows to Move of Their Own Volition” because of the work’s numerous “shadow” effects, such as the opening solo material which is presented as a kind of stark silhouette in contrast to its full-color orchestrated recapitulation at the end. This is but one example of “shadow” effects. The illusionary space is defined by its various axes: the horizontal, long melodic, melismatic phrases initially introduced by the solo viola at the onset; the vertical, large “sound-blocks” with the instrumental sounds piled one upon the other in various tutti textures; and the axis of distance, soft vs. loud, muted vs. non-muted, flat timbres vs. bright timbres. There are basically two types of silence: relaxed silences before or after smooth melodic phrases, and the dramatic silences spliced in before or after sudden vertical outbursts of sound. The duration of the silences are important as distance cues (the size of the gap can help create the illusion of distance traveled in the general fabric of the music). Ultimately the various contrasting elements resolve and blend by the conclusion of the work.
