The theme of death permeates the music and is especially apparent at the beginning of the work. However, the promise of salvation through the Messiah transforms the music, and the choir ends the piece decisively in a major key, symbolizing the Savior's triumph over death and the forgiveness of sin. The piece would work equally well in a liturgical setting and a concert hall.
