The project to adapt Veljo Tormis' music with a French text was born from a request from Veljo Tormis to Loic Pierre, during an interview in 2002.
The aim is to make these extraordinary polyphonic melodies more accessible to the general public.
This eminently delicate work, initiated by Loic Pierre and Pierre Gief, is carried out with millimetric precision. It is neither a translation nor an adaptation, but the French text, of great literary quality, also remains extremely faithful to the musicality of the original work. The work of a goldsmith!

Loic Pierre tell us :

...A visit to Estonia opens my eyes. In his jovial company, my convictions are shaken.
I immerse myself in the heart of the Estonian culture. The power and fertility of the roots of this people bewitch me. The forests and the Baltic Sea, the incredible linguistic heritage, the magnificent capital Tallinn, even the wounds inflicted by the Soviet Union, all make sense.
Veljo Tormis is here the humble bearer of this fragile memory. I leave with a singular picture book and an irresistible desire to pass it on...
... The death of Veljo Tormis on 21 January 2017 brings down my last certainties.
The question then arises: how to translate these immortal stories while respecting dialects and poetry? How can one go from one colour to another without distorting the musicality of the language? How to make French sound without betraying the original version? To tell fables and epic tales with the same syntactic humility?
Then, by chance, comes the wonderful encounter with the poet and sound artist PierreGief. Mastering all the musical parameters (Pierre Gief was an oboist), the guest rhymer understands from the very first listening that he cannot offer a literal translation or a word-for-word translation.
The French stories of the Baltic peoples will be chiselled as much in the vocal golds of the Estonian language as in the equally luminous French poetry. A stubborn search for sounds that substitutes, without betraying them, the shimmering words of French poetry for the long necklaces of colourful Estonian vowels.
A virtuoso and totally new work where one can finally hear, understand and share the laughter and complaints of this great singing people. >>
