A polyrhythm is when two or more conflicting rhythms are performed simultaneously. The simplest example is three beats against two beats, as pictured above. When a composer uses this effect for an extended section of music, it’s called a cross-rhythm. In this piece, your right hand plays the solid duple rhythm of My Faith Looks Up to Thee, while your left hand plays an accompaniment pattern in a triple rhythm. It makes it interesting to play and, I hope, interesting to listen to.
