Composed by David Leech. Jazz. Score and Parts. 101 pages. David Leech #4967037. Published by David Leech (A0.973277).

Medium up-tempo swing (quarter=152)
Running time: approximately 5:30

Jack’s Blues was composed over a set of sophisticated blues changes shown to me by the late guitarist Jack Flannigan. Jack was my friend, mentor, and informal harmony teacher when I first arrived in Los Angeles.

The arrangement starts with a unison statement of the theme by the sax section. Rhythmic brass punctuations are added the second time though. The third chorus breaks into three part counterpoint, followed by three choruses of tenor sax solo. Next comes a chorus of unison sax soli accompanied by some sporadic rhythm section punches, and then a challenging chorus of fully harmonized sax soli. Two choruses of band ensemble lead into a 36 bar trumpet solo, the first 12 of which is accompanied only by string bass. After a couple of "shout" choruses build to a climax the saxes return to take it out with another statement of the melody.

Brass parts are moderately high. The lead trumpet has several high Ds, a high E-flat, and an E-natural.
