Based loosely on a 17th century melody composed by Hans Leo Hassler (and later used numerous times by J.S. Bach), this is not a technically difficult work but, rather, one that challenges the control and sensitivity so necessary for making music, not just playing notes. It must be performed slowly and expressively. The oboe and english horn parts are essential but, if neither is available, could be substituted with a variety of woodwind instruments, including clarinet, alto, and soprano saxophones.
