An Olympic Celebration is a tribute to the pursuit of excellence and the triumph of the human spirit. This piece was commissioned by The West Vancouver Youth Band for the build up to the 2010 Winter Olympics. The initial "festive fanfare", based on open fifths moving in contrary motion, brings the athletes out into the arena. This leads to the "parade of the athletes" theme. Then comes the establishment of the "heroic theme" in the woodwinds and horns - moving through different sections - until the transition, with an alto saxophone solo and an oboe solo, leading into the "flashback" section. Here we go into the minds of the athletes and the internal and physical struggles thathave brought them to this place. The melody is epic; rich in feeling and full of heart. This moves through various moods until the introduction of the "challenge" theme; a theme stated by the horns and trombones, which passes through the different sections of the band. A restatement of the "flashback" theme, this time triumphant, takes us to a final fanfare of celebration and jubilation.
An Olympic Celebration is een eerbetoon aan het menselijke streven naar perfectie. Het werk is geschreven in opdracht van The West Vancouver Youth Band - in de aanloop naar de Olympische Spelen van 2010. Na de feestelijke openingsfanfarevolgen verschillende aansprekende thema's en passages elkaar op. De compositie eindigt triomfantelijk, met een uitbundige fanfare.
An Olympic Celebration wurde zur Einstimmung auf die Olympischen Winterspiele 2010 in Vancouver geschrieben. Von der festlichen Eroffnungsfanfare uber sportliche und seelische Hohen und Tiefen der Sportler bewegt sich die Musik immer wieder durch verschiedene Instrumentengruppen: Mal sind es die Holzblaser mit den Hornern, dann eine Solo-Oboe, dann die Horner mit den Posaunen, dazwischen Tutti-Passagen - bis zum Fest- und Jubelfinale hat das sich gesamte Blasorchester glanzend prasentiert!
An Olympic Celebration ("Une celebration olympique") salue la recherche de l'excellence et le triomphe de l'esprit humain. Cette œuvre de commande a ete composee pour le West Vancouver Youth Band a l'occasion de la designation de Vancouver, ville hote des Jeux Olympiques d'hiver en 2010. La fanfare d'ouverture aux accents festifs est structuree en intervalles de quintes a vide qui evoluent en mouvement contraire. Les athletes arrivent dans le stade. Le defile des delegations se deroule sous une musique intitulee Parade of the athletes (La parade des athletes). Un theme heroique, joue par les cors et les bois, chemine de pupitre en pupitre et mene a un passagede transition (solo de saxophone alto & de hautbois) qui annonce une retrospective. Nous sommes captives par la l'etat d'esprit des athletes. Nous decouvrons les luttes interieures et physiques sans nombre auxquelles ils ont du faire face pour atteindre leur objectif : une place aux Jeux. La melodie, expressive et pleine de sensibilite, est anime d'un souffle epique. Elle change de caractere au gre de la trame et se fond dans l'exposition d'un theme illustrant le defi qui attend les athletes. Ce theme est introduit par les cors et les trombones puis repris par divers pupitres de la formation. Le materiel thematique de la retrospective est reexpose de maniere triomphale, annoncant la fanfare finale qui celebre avec ferveur l'esprit olympique.
