This work is based on an old folksong from Jeju, an island off the coast of South Korea. The song tells of the legend of the origins of the island through a volcano — the embodiment of a goddess. Along with various treatments of the folksong melody Jacob de Haan weaves into his work a repeating majestic theme to honour the goddess and powerful robust passages symbolising the powerful forces of nature that brought forth the island.
Dit werk is gebaseerd op een oud volkslied van het eiland Jeju, een vulkanisch eiland voor de kust van Zuid-Korea. Het lied gaat over de legende van deze vulkaan. Het is een vertelling waarbij de vulkaan de belichaming is van eengodin. Krachtige passages symboliseren het onvoorstelbare natuurgeweld waaruit het eiland ontstond. Een werk vol thematiek en afwisseling!
Dieses Werk basiert auf einem alten Volkslied aus Jeju, einer Insel vor Südkorea. Das Lied erzahlt von der Legende über die Entstehung der Insel durch einen Vulkan - die Verkorperung einer Gottin. Neben der Volksliedmelodie in verschiedenen Gewandern erklingt in Jacob de Haans Werk immer wieder ein majestatisches Motiv zu Ehren der Gottin und kraftvolle Passagen symbolisieren das gewaltige Naturereignis, das die Insel hervorbrachte.
Cette oeuvre est en partie fondee sur une chanson folklorique d'une ile proche de la Coree du Sud. La composition debute avec un motif lent et dramatique dans un style solennel. Puis la melodie se fait entendre et se developpe en un passage puissant et emouvant. Presente par les percussions soutenues d'une note pedale interpretee par les instruments graves, le rythme de la chanson s'intensifie pour aboutir a une apotheose qui donne naissance a un nouveau theme melodique. Une oeuvre eclatante, a la palette sonore magnifiquement developpee.
Questo brano si basa su un'antica canzone popolare di Jeju, un'isola al largo della Corea del Sud. La canzone racconta che l'eruzione di un vulcano, reincarnazione di una dea, ha dato origine all'isola. Accanto alla melodia della canzone popolare, Jacob de Haan presenta a piu riprese nuovo un tema maestoso in onore della Dea, e passaggi potenti a simboleggiare gli eventi naturali che hanno dato origine all'isola.
