The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims’ March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician, Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes, which at the time made little sense to him. However, he did notice that the bass line was similar to a “walking bass” line in a standard swing tune.In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn’s original bass line, melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows, maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred yearslater, he could have become one of our big band leaders!

Dit arrangement van Mendelssohns Italiaanse Symfonie (ook wel Pilgrims’ March genoemd) omvat de originele baslijn, melodische lijn en contrapuntmotieven - maar met een swing feel - waar de arrangeur ondersteunende ritmischelijnen en een drumset aan heeft toegevoegd. Bij de verandering van toonsoort heeft hij zich wat melodische vrijheid gegund voor de ‘shout’, opnieuw gevolgd door het oorspronkelijke materiaal om het arrangement te voltooie.

Das Andante aus Mendelssohns Italienischer Sinfonie (das auch Pilgermarsch genannt wird) enthält im ersten Teil eine wunderschöne Melodie, unterstützt von einer denkbar einfachen Basslinie und Kontrapunktfiguren. Diese Bearbeitung verwendet die originale Basslinie, Melodielinie und Kontrapunktfiguren - nur eben mit einem Swing-Feel - welchen der Arrangeur unterstützende rhythmische Linien und ein Schlagzeug hinzufügte. Sehr originell!

L’Andante de la Symphonie italienne de Felix Mendelssohn évoque quelque procession, d’où sa parenté avec la Marche des pèlerins d’Harold en Italie de Berlioz. Le thème introductif revêt de sublimes teintes sombres et mystérieuses qui s’épanouissent sur une ligne de basse simple et de nombreuses broderies contrapuntiques. Pilgrims’ Swing (“Le swing des pèlerins”) s’appuie sur la ligne de basse, la ligne mélodique et les broderies contrapuntiques originales. Seules modifications apportées par Graham Lloyd : la composante swing, un soutien rythmique et une partie de batterie. Qui sait ? Si Mendelssohn était né trois cents ans plus tard,peut-être aurait-il été leader d’un Big Band !
