Prelude to a Celebration is a fantastic way to open any concert inthe tradition of great symphonic openers. The work starts with atriumphant yet majestic fanfare from the trumpet section which givesthe basis for the whole work. Prelude to a Celebrationbegint met een majestueus lento dat is opgebouwd rond een openingsfanfare die eerst in de trompetten naar voren komt. Vervolgens leidt een stuwend vivace het hoofdthema in over een ritmisch ostinato.Een wisseling van toonsoort introduceert de brede triomelodie, waarna het hoofdthema terugkeert. Dit kondigt een reprise aan, die leidt naar een terugkeer van de openingsfanfare - en daarmee het waardige slot van de compositie.
"Praludium zu einer Feier" ist schon dem Titel nach ein klassisches festliches Eroffnungswerk und diese Erwartung wird nicht enttauscht. Philip Sparke gestaltete dieses sehr abwechslungsreich mit einer Trompetenfanfare in der majestatischen Eroffnung, gefolgt von einem flotten Vivace. Nach einer breit angelegten Triomelodie rundet eine Reprise, die an die Eroffnungsfanfare erinnert, das Werk wurdig ab.
Philip Sparke a compose cette œuvre a l'occasion du 40e anniversaire de l'Orchestre d'Harmonie Izumiotsu City Band d'Osaka au Japon. La creation a eu lieu le 19 novembre 2006 par la formation dedicataire sous la direction de Kazuyoshi Uemura.La composition debute avec un majestueux Lento, base sur une fanfare d'ouverture, exposee par les trompettes. S'ensuit un Vivace virevoltant, qui reprend le theme initial sur un ostinato rythmique. Un changement de tonalite introduit la tres ample ligne melodique du trio, avant de reprendre le theme premier. Cette ultime reprise annonce la reexposition de la fanfare d'ouverture qui clot l'œuvre avec brio.
