The Harbour:Sunday Morningwas commissioned by the Jersey Instrumental Service for the Jersey Youth Wind Band.The history of the Channel Islands is inextricably linked to the sea and this determined the theme for this composition. The composer is intrigued by man?s fascination with elements of nature (such as the sea, mountains, deserts and deep space), which are both beautiful and dangerous. Bring the power of the sea to your concert with this truly descriptive piece.
The Harbour: Sunday Morning werd geschreven voor de Jersey Instrumental Service voor de Jersey Youth Wind Band. Jersey is een van de Kanaaleilanden. De geschiedenis van deze eilanden is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de zee, die daaromhet thema vormt voor deze compositie. The Harbour: Sunday Morning begint met de zee op z'n kalmst - blauw en majestueus - begeleid door de kreten van zeevogels. Maar we worden snel herinnerd aan de gevaren ervan terwijl snelleremuziek in shantystijl leidt naar de beschrijving van een storm. Na een enorme climax neemt het geraas langzaam af en wordt de zee wederom kalm - hoewel het besef van mogelijk gevaar nooit geheel verdwijnt.
The Harbour: Sunday Morning beginnt mit einem Bild des ruhigen Meeres, begleitet vom Geschrei der Seevogel. Bald fuhrt jedoch schnellere Musik im Stil von Seemannsliedern zur Beschreibung eines Sturms. Nach einem gewaltigen Hohepunkt legt dieser sich allmahlich und die See ist wieder ruhig, mit einem bedrohlichen Unterton. Philip Sparkes deskriptive Komposition zeichnet ein lebhaftes musikalisches Bild vom Meer, das die Phantasie von Musikern und Publikum beflugeln wird.

Situata al largo delle coste francesi, britannica,ma autonoma, l'Isola di Jersey non fa parte del Regno Unito. La storia di queste isole e strettamente legata al mare, soggetto che ha ispirato questa composizione. Con uno sguardo intrigato, a volte meravigliato, Philip Sparke descrive il fascino che una natura splendida e allo stesso tempo minacciosa esercita da sempre sull'uomo.
