The original concept for this work was a suite of short movements, each with its own character, but by the time the first movement was complete it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores the unsurpassable ability of the euphonium to play lyrically, with a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement, which is almost bebop in style and shows off the jazzier capabilities of the euphonium. The concerto was composed for the virtuoso soloist,Steven Mead. A version for euphonium and piano is also available.

Dit concerto is een door de componist aangepaste versie van zijn Clarinet Concerto. Het openingsdeel bevat veel syncoperingen en heeft een bijna ragtimeachtige stijl. Het langzamere tweede deel verkent aanvankelijk het vermogenvan het euphonium om lyrisch te spelen - met een thema dat later wordt opgepikt door het orkest terwijl de solist er een delicate discant in verweeft. Deze passage leidt naar het derde deel, dat een bebopachtige stijl heeft.De aanpassing voor euphonium is gemaakt voor de virtuoze solist Steven Mead.

Euphonium Concerto No. 2 ist ein Konzert fur Euphonium und Blasorchester in vier Satzen. Der Eroffnungssatz enthalt viel Synkopierung und erinnert stilistisch fast an einen Rag. Der langsamere zweite Satz erkundet die lyrische Seite des Euphoniums, wahrend der Stil des dritten Satzes an Be-Bop erinnert und die jazzigere Seite in den Vordergrund ruckt. Euphonium Concerto No. 2 est une adaptation du Concerto pour Clarinette compose a l'origine pour la clarinettiste concertiste Linda Merrick. Philip Sparke en a realise une adaptation pour euphonium pour le soliste virtuose Steven Mead. Le mouvement d'ouverture, ecrit dans un style proche du ragtime, est riche en motifs syncopes. Le second mouvement, plus lent, explore, dans un premier temps, les capacites lyriques de l'euphonium a travers une melodie reprise ulterieurement par l'orchestre tandis que le soliste faconne son dechant en filigrane. Le troisieme mouvement a tendance bebop met l'accent sur le cote jazzy de l'euphonium.

Euphonium Concerto No. 2 e un adattamento del Concerto per Clarinetto composto per la clarinettista Linda Merrick. Philip Sparke ha realizzato un adattamento per eufonio con il solista virtuoso Steven Mead. Il movimento di apertura, scritto in uno stile vicino al ragtime, e ricco di motivi sincopati. Il secondo movimento, piu lento, esplora dapprima le capacita liriche dell'eufonio attraverso una melodia ripresa dall'orchestra,mentre il solista forma il suo controcanto in filigrana. Il terzo movimento con sfumature bebop evidenzia il carattere jazz dell'eufonio.
