Manhattan was commissioned by the United States Army Band for their solo trumpet player Woodrow English, and first performed by them in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November 2003. The two movement work demonstrates both the lyrical and technical abilities of this outstanding player. The 'theme' is a weekend in New York and the opening bluesy movement, Saturday Serenade, describes the city on a Saturday night, perhaps in a smoke-filled jazz bar. While writing Sunday Scherzo, the composer pictured an early morning jog in Central Park.This vivaciously rhythmic second movement ends with an even quicker coda bringing the work to a brilliant close. Each movementcan also be played individually when a shorter solo is required. Manhattan is a major new work in the solo trumpet repertoire.

Manhattan werd in opdracht van de United States Army Band gecomponeerd voor solotrompettist Woodrow English en vierde zijn premiere in november 2003 in de New Yorkse Carnegie Hall. In dit werk in twee delen komen zowel de lyrischeals de technische vaardigheden van deze fantastische speler aan bod. Het 'thema' is een weekend in New York en de bluesachtige opening, Saturday Serenade, beschrijft de stad op een zaterdagavond, wellicht in een rokerigjazzcafe. Bij het schrijven van Sunday Scherzo had de componist de vroege joggers in Central Park voor ogen. Dit levendige, ritmische deel eindigt met een nog sneller coda, dat voor een fonkelend slot zorgt. Beide delenkunnen afzonderlijk worden gespeeld wanneer een kortere solo wenselijk is.

Manhattan ist ein zweisatziges Stuck, das sowohl die lyrischen als auch die technischen Fahigkeiten des Solisten herausstreicht. Manhattan nous emmene a New York le temps d'un week-end. Le mouvement d'ouverture, Saturday Serenade, baigne dans l'atmosphere "bluesy" d'un samedi soir probablement passe dans l'ambiance feutree et enfumee d'un club de jazz. Avec Sunday Scherzo, Philip Sparke illustre un jogging matinal dans Central Park. Ce second mouvement, rythmiquement dynamique, se conclut sur une coda encore plus vive qui mene l'oeuvre vers une fin brillante.
