Armin Schaer commissioned this work in his search for a new piece for the tuba. More specifically, he wanted a work that showed off the versatility of this splendid instrument, written in a musical style that is both fresh and modern, while not banishing the orchestra to a simple supporting role. Taking all these specifications into account, Thomas Doss created a work that allows stylistic leaps and is fun, exciting, romantic, and virtuosic, but does not lose sight of the thread that connects the opening measures to the very last.Armin Schaer describes his Panoptikum as follows:Panoptikum is a show of appreciation for my beautiful home and community at LakeConstance, an eventful life, the people that have enriched this life, and a fascinating instrument: the tuba. This work musically embodies the many different moods found around theBodensee - cheerfulness and melancholy, departures and longing, calm and agitation. The roles of the soloist and the orchestra were consciously crafted in a way that does not follow the usual conventions of the genre. The work should spark emotions, address broad segments of listeners, and persuade them of the tuba's ability to be a solo instrument as well as the richness symphonic wind ensembles have to offer. I hope this work enriches the lives of all the soloists and orchestras that cross its path, as well as everyone in the audience who gets to partake!
Armin Schaer, die op zoek was naar een nieuwe compositie voor de tuba, vroeg de componist dit werk voor hem te schrijven. Om precies te zijn: hij verzocht hem een werk te creeren dat de veelzijdigheid van dit schitterende instrumentvoor het voetlicht zou brengen - in een verfrissende moderne muziekstijl waarin het orkest desondanks een eenvoudige begeleidende rol zou krijgen. Met deze aanwijzingen in het achterhoofd schreef Thomas Doss een werk met ruimtevoor stilistische sprongen: het is vrolijk, spannend, romantisch en virtuoos, maar er blijft steeds eenrode draad aanwezig die de openingsmaten aan de laatste verbindt.Armin Schaer beschrijft Panoptikum als volgt:Panoptikumis een uiting van waardering voor mijn prachtige thuis aan de Bodensee (Lake Constance), een actief leven, de mensen die dit leven hebben verrijkt, plus een fascinerend instrument: de tuba. Het werk is een muzikale belichamingvan de vele verschillende stemmingen rondom de Bodensee - vreugde en melancholie, afscheid en verlangen, kalmte en onrust. De rollen van de solist en het orkest volgen bewust niet de gebruikelijke conventies van het genre. Hetwerk straalt emotie uit, spreekt een breed publiek aan en overtuigt de luisteraars van de kracht van de tuba als solo-instrument, maar ook van de klankrijkdom die harmonieorkesten te bieden hebben. Hopelijk verrijkt dit werk delevens van alle solisten en orkestleden die het op hun pad vinden, evenals alle toehoorders in de concertzalen!
Dieses Werk wurde von Armin Schaer in Auftrag gegeben. Er wünschte sich ein Werk für Tuba, das die Vielseitigkeit dieses Instruments zur Schau stellen und gleichzeitig eine abwechslungsreiche und moderne Musiksprache sprechen sollte, ohne das Orchester in eine Hintergrundrolle zu drangen. Diesen Vorgaben entsprechend hat Thomas Doss ein Werk geschrieben, welches stilistische Sprünge erlaubt, romantisch, spannend und virtuos ist, aber trotzdem einen roten Faden hat, der es dramaturgisch zusammenhalt.Armin Schaer hat Panoptikum mit folgenden Worten beschrieben:Panoptikum ist ein Dank an meine wunderschone Heimat, den Bodensee, an einereignisreiches Leben, an Menschen, die dieses Leben bereicherten, und an ein faszinierendes Instrument: die Tuba. Das Solowerk soll die vielfaltigen Stimmungen des Bodensees - Heiterkeit und Melancholie, Aufbruch und Sehnsucht, Ruhe und drangende Bewegung - musikalisch darstellen. Ganz bewusst wurde die formale Gestaltung des Soloparts und der Begleitung abweichend von der genreüblichen Gestaltung gewünscht. Das Werk soll emotional berühren, breite Horerschichtenansprechen und von den Qualitaten der Tuba in solistischer Rolle sowie dem Sinfonischen Blasorchester als sensiblem Begleiter überzeugen. Ich wünsche den Solisten und Blasorchestern eine bereichernde Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk und den Zuhorern uneingeschrankten musikalischen Genuss!Blaustein im Herbst 2009
Armin Schaer a commande cette oeuvre alors qu'il etait a la recherche d'une nouvelle piece pour tuba. Il insista sur le fait que la composition devait souligner la versatilite de ce merveilleux instrument, sans que l'orchestre soit relegue a un simple rang d'accompagnateur. Le style devait etre frais et moderne. En tenant compte de tous ces elements, Thomas Doss a cree une oeuvre permettant des sauts stylistiques dans un contexte plaisant, passionnant, romantique et virtuose, sans perdre de vue le fil conducteur qui mene l'oeuvre de la premiere a la derniere mesure.Armin Schaer decrit l'oeuvre comme suit :<< Panoptikum (Panoptique) temoigne de mon affection pour lemagnifique lac de Constance d'ou je suis originaire, ses habitants, ma vie passionnante et les gens qui l'ont enrichie, et enfin, pour le tuba, un instrument que je trouve absolument fascinant. La trame fait ressortir les nombreuses differentes atmospheres qui regnent autour du lac : la gaiete et la melancolie ; les departs et le desir impatient de revenir, le calme et l'agitation. Les roles du soliste et de l'orchestre s'affranchissent volontairement des conventions usuelles du genre. La musique suffit a susciter des emotions, toucher un large public et le convaincre que le tuba peut etre un instrument solo a part entiere, tout en revelant la richesse de l'Orchestre d'Harmonie. J'espere que cette oeuvre enrichira la vie musicale de tous les solistes et orchestres qui croiseront son chemin, et charmera tous les auditeurs qui seront amenes a l'ecouter ! >>
