J. S. Bach wrote beautiful partitas for solo instruments, notably the violin.  The movements are often in a dance format (e.g., sarabande, allemanda). 

Bach's work inspired Mike Strand to compose a similar set of movements for other dance styles, introduced by a prelude.  The dance movements are waltz, hornpipe, tango, and swing.
