Program Notes

Alleluia is a beautiful choralcomposition written by American composer, Eric Whitacre.  Alleluiawas written for Dr. David Skinner and the Sidney Sussex Chapel Choir andpremiered in the Sidney Sussex Chapel, Cambridge University, on June 25,2011.

Whitacre had previously resisted setting texts that could be used in aliturgical context, until he spent a term in Cambridge singing liturgical workswith this ensemble.  He began to see thedeep wisdom in the liturgical service and the single word Alleluia, meaning “praise God” most enchanted him.  He explained, “It seemed the perfect fit forthe music of my wind symphony work, October, which to me is a simple and humble meditation on the glory of Autumn.”

Having previously performed Whitacre’s Octoberwith the Oregon Symphonic Band, I was already a fan of Whitacre’s music whenflutist Sydnee Stein commissioned me to arrange Alleluia for Columbia Flute Choir.

A note about marked tempi:  The tempo markings are as they were writtenin the vocal score.  As I’ve listened torecordings, most notably those conducted by Eric Whitacre, the tempi are quitea bit slower than marked, changing a 6 ½ minute piece into a 9 minutepiece.  So use some discretion in settingtempos.

There are a few spots where divisi in octaves are marked: B1 along with Bbelow the staff, for instruments without a b-foot; there are also a few spots, including measure 13, where Flute 1 plays up to A3, the conductor can usediscretion as to how best balance and have some players play the octave lower.

This arrangement is scored for piccolo, 4 c-flutes, 2 altoflutes, and 2 bass flutes, with optional contrabass flute in C, contra altoflute in G (doubling Alto Flute 2), and sub contra alto flute in G (doubling BassFlute 2).
