Composed by Gabriel Faure (1845-1924). Arranged by Brock Lupton (1948-). Christian,Romantic Period,Sacred. 61 pages. Brock Lupton #4756227. Published by Brock Lupton (A0.942421).

Why a re-orchestration of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem? One answer is found in Michael Steen’s "The Lives and Times of Great Composers" (Icon Books, London, revised edition 2010), page 629: "The Requiem is often criticized for its weak orchestration," and, in a footnote "The continuous use of the organ is criticised; also, the clarinet and flute players sit for 40 minutes in order to play a mere 11 bars of relatively unimportant music". Does Steen himself offer a reliable opinion? One reviewer wrote "Steen seems to know everything … about music".

On that basis, the following arrangement is a substantial reorchestration. The complete elimination of the organ allows for more rewarding and balanced use of wind instruments. The orchestra score is a full score including all vocal parts (choir and solo) for all seven movements.

Having played this work in its original version (as a French horn player and clarinetist, I covered both instruments thereby at least reducing what is still a great deal of idle time for the player) I can affirm the inspiring and unique effect of Faure’s "calm, languid" style (Steen, page 628). The composer himself wrote "I have instinctively sought to escape from what is thought right and proper, after all the years of accompanying burial services on the organ…. I wanted to write something different." (quoted by Steen from R. Orledge, "Gabriel Faure", London, Eulenberg, 1979, page 113)

The complete set of orchestral parts is available separately on SMP.
