This arrangement is useful for concert presentation or for worship services when a serious tone is appropriate. It is especially suitable for Good Friday or for a funeral or celebration of life, solemn and yet serene. The use of English as the sung language seems consistent with Brahms' intention that the work be in the vernacular for ease of understanding and to offer an alternative to the tradition of the Latin "requiem".
The performance time is just under 10 minutes.
The choir part (minus piano) is available for separate purchase. The reduced number of pages required by the singers if this option is chosen is both easier to use and more economical when multiple choral parts are printed. The piano-vocal score is then required only for the accompanist and the conductor (this arrangement is not suitable for unaccompanied choral performance).
