Zeit seines Lebens hatte der vielseitig interessierte Komponist zentrale Werke fremdsprachiger und deutscher Lyrik vertont. Zu Schillers beruhmtem Klagegesang Gruppe aus dem Tartarus hatte er bereits 1989 ein Werk fur gemischten Chor a cappella veroffentlicht (in 5 Gesange C 46 634). Wenige Jahre vor seinem Tod nahm er sich desselben Gedichts noch einmal an; jedoch ist das fruher vorherrschende Gefuhl der Verzweiflung der in die Unterwelt Verbannten abgemildert zur Ergebung in das unabanderliche Schicksal. Ein tiefsinniges, klangvolles, meisterhaftes Alterswerk!
