Composed by Nicholas Ryan Kelly. 21st Century,Contemporary Classical,Impressionistic. 8 pages. Published by Nicholas Ryan Kelly (S0.583531).

A dynamic piece about transformation, suitable for collegiate and advanced choirs. Based on a poem from Carl Sandburg's Pulitzer-Prize-winning Cornhuskers (1918), it begins mysteriously and builds to a radiant climax.

This piece's broad emotional arc makes it a powerful selection for concerts about transformation, rebirth, and renewal. The poem's central metaphor--that of plants blooming and rising from the soil--also makes it a good fit for spring concerts.

It was written for Pro Coro Canada while in residence at the Banff Centre's Choral Art program.

LOAM by Carl Sandburg

In the loam we sleep,
In the cool moist loam,
To the lull of years that pass
And the break of stars,

From the loam, then,
The soft warm loam,
We rise:
To shape of rose leaf,
Of face and shoulder.

We stand, then,
To a whiff of life,
Lifted to the silver of the sun
Over and out of the loam
A day.
