The name Shostakovich probably strikes fear into the heart of many a casual musician or concert-goer, suggesting heavy classical music. This piece, though is a charming Waltz from his "Suite for Variety Orchestra" and is so well-known that virtually everyone will have heard it as background music to a film, played behind a TV advertisement, or indeed a key component of the Stanley Kubrick film "Eyes Wide Shut".

This version is for 3 guitars (or large ensemble) and the score contains two slightly different "Guitar 2" parts. One, based on the orchestral score, becomes quite busy in the section before the reprise of the opening theme, and is Intermediate standard. The other is simplied and just continues the existing countermelody, making the part Early Intermediate.

Guitar 1 is the tune, and Guitar 3 uses a set of familiar and well-known chord shapes, sometimes four-note and sometimes 3-note, to provide the texture underneath.

Definitely a piece an audience will warm to, and not too tricky to play. The part scores have no page turns (though Guitar 3 is three pages long).
