The legendary Genovese violinist Niccolo Paganini (Genoa, 27 October 1782 - Nice, 27 May 1840) was probably the only great composer of the past to show a constant interest in the guitar and, although he never played the instrument in public concerts,a number of testimonies to his ability as a guitarist have come down to us. For the Genovese maestro the guitar constituted the harmonic and accompanying instrument par excellence, so much so that in his music it occupied the role normally entrustedby composers of his era to the piano. Paganini wrote 140 compositions for solo guitar and almost all his works for strings (mainly for violin: sonatas, duets, trios, quartets and even someconcertos for violin and orchestra) were conceived withaccompaniment by guitar.
The selection of pieces is based on the idea of extracting from this disparate mass the works that best represent the spirit and originality of Paganini.
Today, to render this music accessible to any interpreter, it is necessary to supplement it with a polyphonic realisation of the parts: this edition adheres to the style of the Viennese publishers in the era of Mauro Giuliani, or, in other words, itwrites the high and low voices separately, grouping all the harmonic fillings on these two principal voices. With this type of notation, moreover, it is necessary to apply all the performance practices in use between the end of the 18th century andthe beginning of the 19th century.

De legendarische violist Niccolo Paganini uit Genua schreef 140 composities for solo gitaar en nagenoeg al zijn werken voor strijkers (voornamelijk voor viool: sonates, duo's, trio's, kwartetten en zelfs een aantal concerto's voor viool en orkest)zijn geschreven met begeleiding van gitaar. Deze selectie van werken berust op de gedachte om uit deze uiteenlopende hoeveelheid aan werken diegene te selecteren die het beste de geest en originaliteit van Paganini weergeven.

La guitare a represente pour le maitre genois l'instrument harmonique et accompagnateur par excellence, au point qu'elle occupe dans sa production le role que les compositeurs de son temps confiaient normalement au piano. Paganini a ecrit 140 pieces pour guitare seule et presque toutes ses oeuvres pour cordes (pour violon, principalement : sonates, duos,trios, quatuors et meme certains concertos pour violon et orchestre) furent concues avec un accompagnement de guitare. Le choix anthologique est base sur l'intention d'extraire de cette surabondance dispersive les pieces qui representent au mieux l'esprit et l'originalite de Paganini. De nos jours il faut, pour rendre cette musique accessible a n'importe quel interprete, la completer par une realisation polyphonique des parties : cette edition se conforme au style des editeurs viennois de l'epoque de Mauro Giuliani, c'est-a-dire qu'elle ecrit separement la voix superieure et la basse, reliant tous les remplissages harmoniques a ces deux voix principales. C'est du reste a ce type d'ecriture, que s'appliquent toutes les pratiques d'execution en vigueur a cheval entre la fin du XVIIIe et les premieres annees du XIXe siecle.

Il leggendario violinista genovese Niccolo Paganini (Genova, 27 ottobre 1782 - Nizza, 27 maggio 1840) e stato probabilmente l'unico grande compositore del passato a dedicare costanti attenzioni alla chitarra e, sebbene egli non suonasse mai lostrumento in concerti pubblici, ci sono giunte diverse testimonianze sulla sua abilita di chitarrista. La chitarra ha costituito per il maestro genovese lo strumento armonico e d'accompagnamento per eccellenza, tanto da occupare nella sua produzioneil ruolo normalmente affidato al pianoforte dai compositori a lui contemporanei. Paganini ha scritto 140 composizioni per chitarra sola e quasi tutti i suoi lavori per archi (principalmenteper violino: sonate, duetti, trii, quartetti e perfino alcuniconcerti per violino e orchestra) furono concepiti con accompagnamento di chitarra.
La scelta antologica si basa pertanto sull'idea di estrarre da questa sovrabbondanza dispersiva le opere che meglio rappresentano lo spirito e l'originalita di Paganini.Oggi, per rendere questa musica fruibile da qualunque interprete, occorre integrarla con una realizzazione polifonica delle parti: questa edizione si attiene allo stile degli editori viennesi dell'epoca di Mauro Giuliani, ovvero scrive separatamentela voce alta e quella bassa, rag!gruppando tutti i riempitivi armonici a queste due voci principali. A questo tipo di scrittura, inoltre, vanno applicate tutte le prassi esecutive in vigore a cavallo tra la fine del Settecento e i primi annidell'Ottocento.
