Prelude to a Pageant was commissioned by Woodley Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2014. Celebratory in nature, Prelude to a Pageant includes a famous musical link to The Reading Rota (Sumer is icumen in), a manuscript dating from around 1240, discovered nearby Reading Abbey. This lively tune appears early in the work, after an arresting, rhythmic opening and expressive slower section, and also forms the final climax.
Prelude to a Pageant werd geschreven in opdracht van de Woodley Concert Band ter gelegenheid van het veertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest, in 2014. Het werk is feestelijk van karakter en het bevat een muzikale verwijzing naar de beroemde Reading Rota (Sumer is icumen in), een manuscript dat dateert van rond 1240 en dat dicht bij Reading Abbey is gevonden. Deze levendige melodie verschijnt vroeg in het werk en vormt ook het hoogtepunt aan het slot.
Prelude to a Pageant wurde 2014 von der Woodley Concert Band aus Anlass seines 40-jährigen Bestehens in Auftrag gegeben. Das Stück enthält eine berühmte musikalische Verbindung zu Reading rota (Sumer is icumen in), einem Manuskript, das ungefähr aus dem Jahr 1240 stammt und in der Nähe von der Abtei von Reading entdeckt wurde. Dieses lebendige Lied erscheint zu Beginn des Werkes nach einer rhythmischen Einleitung sowie einem langsameren Teil und bildet auch den Höhepunkt.

Cette œuvre festive comprend des insinuations au célèbre « The Reading Rota » (Sumer is icumen in), un manuscrit datant d’environ 1240 découvert près de l’Abbaye de Reading. Cet air vif figure vers le début de l’œuvre, après un début vigoureux et rythmique, et une section expressive et plus lente, et forme aussi l’apogée finale.
