Composed by Joseph Dillon Ford. 20th Century,Baroque. Score and parts. 15 pages. David Warin Solomons2 #3685083. Published by David Warin Solomons2 (A0.958418).
One of two vividly contrasting historicist art songs for solo voice
based on an original Shakespearean Sonnet and poem by the composer.
The text on which "Sonnet" is based was written by the composer for a friend in the late 1980s
and published in the "Loves Ancient and Forbidden" section of Selected Poems in 1990.
The music, composed in late September 2007 for alto (or countertenor) voice with continuo (harpsichord and cello),
echoes the historicist style of the poem and recalls English and continental songs of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The pdf contains score and parts
The sound sample is an electronic preview using cor anglais for the vocal part
The words are:
Señor, I must believe that some years hence
When Time thine orbs hath dimmed and passions pale,
Love shall at last accord due recompense
To one who in His service shall ne'er fail.
For though there be no no no duty more austere
Than championning the lily not the rose,
The former like a bright star shall shine clear
When dark-hued petals deep in dusk repose.
Certs, of a sunlit day fair gloweth that flow'r
Whose crimson doth thy lips incarnadine,
But when the night descendeth in thy descendeth in thy bower,
'Tis to the lily thy view will incline.
Fade not, then, with thy red rose in the gloom,
But on this chaste stalk e'er in radiance bloom.
