Additional instrumental colour and emotional emphasis is provided by a timpani part and a contrabass part. The music was written in memory of the composer's cousin, who commit suicide in August 2007, leaving behind wife, kids, and extended family members. The piece was written in Prince Edward Island, Canada, in the week following the funeral.
