From the Island of Dreams

This collection of fifteen attractive viola solos with piano accompaniment consists of pieces suitable for students from absolute beginner level to those at an elementary stage. It’s intended as supplementary material to your usual tutor books. There’s plenty of contrasting material for student recital, end-of-term shows or anything where music for solo viola is needed. Your students are sure to find these pieces enjoyable and challenging.

You can also obtain an audio MP3 (available separately) containing all fifteen piano accompaniments in high quality stereo sound. This is ideal for practicing purposes or even for performance is there is no pianist available. The accompaniments are played in the same order as the pieces in the book.

The first three pieces use long notes on open strings only with simple bowing and limited dynamic markings. The next three pieces follow a similar pattern but use open strings and first finger while the next three include open strings, first and second fingers. The keys have been limited to major and minor keys which are easily accessible on the viola. Although the pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty you can play them in any order you want, depending on the musical needs of the student. Some of the pieces could be joined together in any order to create a suite. Fingering has been omitted in case you want to use the pieces as sight-reading material.
Every piece has a short keyboard introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The accompaniments have usually been kept as simple as possible with the minimum number of notes. Dynamic markings are used from the start, and some articulations marks (notably staccato) are used. Several pieces have a few measures (bars) rest in the middle, not only to give the player a break and add musical contrast, but also to give experience of counting empty bars during the performance. When space allows, piano cues appear in the solo part.
The music is presented in a single PDF files at 1,200 dpi which can produce a professional-looking printed copy. The file contains a solo viola part and all the piano accompaniments.

Theaudio sample contains the following pieces (1) Dance to the Rising Sun; (2) Waltzat the Seashore; (6) Forest Dance; (8) Water Colors; (13) March of the Hill Childrenand (15) Donkey Ride.
