The very impetus for these twomovements was the idea of the operatic recitative, where there is free movementand rhythm and is gesturally-bound by speech patterns. I wanted to create twovery different movements that would give freedom to the woodwind players inregards to rubato and phrasing, but give them a fundamental path to use just asyou would find in an opera score- there is a general rhythm notated by thecomposer, but everything may be modified within reason by the performer withinthe confines of normal speech-patterns and phrasing. The title of each movementis meant to give a feeling in which the piece could be interpreted as there areno words spoken by the instrumentalists, just markings of expression and rhythmthat I leave up to the players themselves to utilize or not.
*Markingsof “sung” or “MP” are in regards to the individual parts deal with the extendedtechnique of multiphonics wherein the performer is using their air to both playtheir instrument and sing/hum through it at the same time. While someinstruments are able to create actual harmony on their own, for others it ismore of a timbre change.
