To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the joining of Buda and Pest to create the new Budapest, the town council commissioned three of the best composers - Bartók, Dohnányi, and Kodály. The works were left primarily to the discretion of the composers, but time for completion was short. Working quickly, Kodály was able to form a masterful symphonic work with tenor solo and full chorus. Its premiere performance by the Budapest Philharmonic brought raves and fairly launched Kodály on his path to become one of Hungary's most beloved composers. The original study score of 1926 (with revision in 1997) now joins UE's Study Score Series.
