Fischer (FISCHER music 1872) ♫ arranged for piano solo by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ James Nicholson immigrated to the USA from Ireland about 1850. He lived in Philadelphia for about 20 years and moved to Washington DC where he worked as a post office clerk. He wrote lyrics for at least 51 hymns. Whiter than Snow was first published in 1872 in Philadelphia by the Methodist Episcopal Book Room. Ira Sankey (crusade musician for Dwight Moody) republished it in Gospel Hymns No. 2 in 1876, the year of Nicholson’s death. ♫ Psalm 51:7 “Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean; wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.” Bible translators in Haiti were puzzled how to express this idea, Haitians that never travel out of their homeland are unfamiliar with snow.
