An unaccompanied piece in two movements--to be performed individually or as one continuous piece.
Movement I--Prelude
A wandering section. Very free in regards to the tempo with melodic material based more on intervalic relationships than chordal harmonies. Meant to challenge the performer's control over extreme low range by using lyrical passages in the pedal register.
Movement II--Scherzo
A quick, aggressive section. The second movement contrasts the first movement by using more angular motives and sharp, harsh attacks and effects. This section uses a wide variety of extended techniques and challenges the player to accurately spit out difficult passages throughout the horn's range. .
