La Traviata is one of Verdi's most popular and most performed operas, and is based on the play La dame aux Camelias by Alexanndre Dumas. This particular recording, made in 1959, has not been available for many years, despite the historical importance of the lead roles. Victoria De Los Angeles portrays Violetta, and Alfredo is played by Carlo Del Monte who is proud and incisive, contrasting the typical lyric tenors that usually play the role.
