Shostakovich's Eleventh Symphony was inspired by the Russian Revolution of 1905, hence the subtitle "The Year 1905." The piece was an instant success at its premiere in 1957, and the work earned Shostakovich a Lenin Prize in 1958. Emil Tabakov conducts the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra for this recording. Tabakov began his conducting career in 1976 with the Russe Philharmonic Orchestra, and since then has been principal conductor, artistic director, and guest conductor with a number of orchestras all over the world.
