It is religious enough to be performed in church or even a Reform/Conservative synagogue, but secular enough to be performed in the schools - not preaching the message or presuming any truths above any others.
The only thing I can recommend in performance, really, is to tune tenor parts well as they're in close dissonance with the altos and baritones frequently.
