Having attended many opera performances in Vienna, a young Zymanowski set about crafting his own one-act opera in hopes of firmly establishing a career as composer. Begun in 1912, completed in 1913 and contracted with publisher Universal Edition, Hagith would have to wait for its premiere until 1922, after the intervening World War.
