The Oberlin Orchestra has a rich history of conducting collaborators, including Marin Alsop, Pierre Boulez, Tan Dun, Sir Simon Rattle, Robert Shaw, Oscar Shumsky, Igor Stravinsky, John Williams, and Hugh Wolff. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Spano, who studied at Oberlin, leads this January 2007 concert at Carnegie Hall. On the program is Jennifer Higdon's seminal work "blue cathedral", premiered by Spano's baton in 2000. The composer began working on the piece a year after her brother's death; the work leads the listener through an imagined cathedral in the sky towards a cathartic inner peace. This recording also documents the Carnegie Hall debut of acclaimed pianist Pedja Muzijevic, performing Mozarts 25th piano concerto with the Oberlin Orchestra. The program concludes with Bartok's demanding Concerto for Orchestra.
