By Fabio Maestri and Sesto Bruscantini. By Domenico Cimarosa, Francesco Paolo Tosti, Gaetano Donizetti, Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Country of Origin: Italy. Classical. Listening CD. Published by Bongiovanni (NX.GB1236-2).

It seems incredible that for an artist like Sesto Bruscantini - without doubt the best buffo baritone (and not only) of the post-war period - there is no recorded recital or any aria captured on 78 rpm to preserve his memory, and only a few complete opera editions, some of which recorded in studio and many live. This live concert given in Ancona in 1981 and released at the time by Bongiovanni as a 33 rpm, remains the only individual CD performance of this superlative artist who could rightly be considered the true master of an entire repertory. Bruscantini's natural disposition was anything but that of a spotlight-chasing "divo", and with nobility and class to spare, he based his career on absolute professionalism oriented towards progressively more coherent artistic growth. The monopoly of the more comic roles remained in his hands from the '50s to the '80s, where in the same operas, over time, he would substitute the more elderly roles for those he had sung in the early years of his career. This is why for the 154 roles in his repertory there are "only" 113 operas performed over the 45 years of a glorious career (perhaps not always recognized as it should have been) that ended in 1991 to make room for teaching which continued until his death in 2003 in the same city he was born.
