Composed by Jon Naples. Toccata in the style of Theodore Dubois. General. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.6036).Jon Naples has given us a wonderfully-crafted toccata in the style of French composer, Theodore Dubois (1837-1924). This twelve-page piece begins Allegro at quarter note = 100, with a sixteenth note pattern in the right hand over eighth-note motion in the left, reminiscent of the Dubois Toccata in G. C Major moves to E Major for a slower middle section in lyrical quarters and eighths. A cantabile solo line leads to some flashbacks to the beginning rapid motif. The middle section ends with some quick alternation among the three manuals and a slow, rallentando modulation back to C Major. A reprise of the first section material leads to a fitting cadence over a low C pedal point. Moderately difficult, Naples' Toccata in C (a la Dubois) would make a good postlude for a festive occasion ... perhaps a Christmas Midnight Mass built around living American composers?
