With his appearance, Italian sense of melody, German-silvery sound of voice, genuine Hungarian articulation and speech-like unaffectedness of singing, tenor Jozsef Simandy (1916-97) was a special phenomenon of the Hungarian operatic scene: an ideal Lohengrin from the outset. His name was closely linked with Zoltan Kodaly's Psalmus Hungaricus for decades, singing its tenor solo in the composer's presence in several concerts and festivals. This 10-track CD celebration of Simandy's talents includes a decade's worth of recordings in his prime years (1953-63), sung in Hungarian and Italian.
