This setting is for medium voice (mezzo-soprano / baritone) with piano accompaniment.Song List:I. Sing a Song of SixpenceII. Jack SpratIII. Humpty DumptyIV. Hey, Diddle DiddleProgram Notes:The familiar texts used in Four Nursery Rhymes are largely nonsense and are filled with absurd imagery. The music highlights and sometimes heightens these aspects through the use of angular melodies and frequent modulations. There are four brief movements. In "Sing a Song of Sixpence," the accompaniment imitates a minstrel's lute and outlines an augmented triad; in addition there is a fanfare of augmented triads at the end of the movement. "Jack Sprat" uses a soaring melody and rhythmic shifts to create an intensity that overly dramatizes the lyrics. The introduction to "Humpty Dumpty" imitates the solo trumpet line often found in mafia movies, implying that perhaps Humpty's fall was no accident. Finally, "Hey, Diddle Diddle" has a distinctly American feel, starting as bluegrass and becoming a Broadway show tune near the end. Befitting the whimsical text, the left hand of the accompaniment plays the descending first four notes of the Meow Mix jingle (the cat) while the right hand imitates a bluegrass fiddle (the fiddle).
