With over 2000 compositions to his name, Neukomm is one of the most prolific composers of the nineteenth century. Overshadowed by his Viennese contemporaries Neukomm travelled extensively throughout his life and it was during an extended tour of England in 1831 that he began a cycle of writing English songs. Based on the theme of the sea in English Romantic literature these three songs were justifiably popular in the day and are an important addition to Western Art Song.
