Remembered principally as the founding conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Gabrilovich was a gifted pianist who had studied under Rubinstein at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in his youth. These two pieces for piano are from a relatively small number of works he composed for the instrument but they illustrate a sensitive and formidable technique in turn, especially with the concluding study which was composed for the left hand alone.
