The notation complies with the conventions of jazz. In particular, this means that the "hat" accent (^) also implies "staccato" and that eighth notes are to be played with an uneven "swing" feel.* The performer is encouraged to consider the theatrical possibilities of the end of the piece. The final chord is not to be played as a satisfying resolution of the dominant chord that precedes it. At least one other piece (preferably in a different key) should be played before this chord finally fulfils its harmonic destiny. If you are playing this piece on a festival, perhaps a whole different concert or an entire day could go by before the final chord. If you are playing it as an encore, you could stop the piece at the penultimate chord, wait until the audience is on their way out and sneak back to the piano to play the final chord. Or have someone else come out and play it. Or have a recording of the final chord play in the lobby as the audience is leaving. Or e-mail them an mp3 file of the final chord the next day (invite them to sign up in the lobby after the concert), etc., etc.*A NOTE ABOUT SWING: "Swing" means that the eighth notes (and only the eighth notes) are to be played in an uneven rhythm, with the first eighth of each beat slightly longer than the second. Words do not suffice to fully explain the concept, but one important point to keep in mind is that the unevenness changes with the tempo. At a very slow tempo (e.g. quarter note at 60 per minute or less) the relative durations of the two eighths can be about a two-thirds/one-third rhythm, or the equivalent of a quarter note/eighth note unit in compound time. But as the tempo increases, swing eighths grow closer to even eighths, until at a very fast tempo (say quarter note at 240 or more) they are nearly equal. The best way to familiarize yourself with swing is to listen to jazz. The recordings of Charlie Haden's group Quartet West contain many fine examples of swing playing at various tempos.
